Store History

In 1946, Maurice & Emma Horne started a dry goods and children’s wear store in Enfield, Nova Scotia, Canada.  The Company ran this way until 1958 when Maurice started a sideline of hardware to keep himself busy.  In 1963, Frank Horne bought out his parents business and renovated the building to become Enfield Hardware Limited.
When Frank Horne took over the business, he hired a young Bob Bona, who was interested in a job in Enfield area since this was closer to his girlfriend and future wife, Daun.

Horne & Bona together took the Company in a whole new direction.  They were always looking at ways to make the Company grow.

As the operation grew, so did the expertise they could provide to their customers.

It wasn’t long before they found themselves in the business of plumbing, electrical, heating and the carpet business.

In the easy 70’s, it seemed like a natural to get into building supplies and this is where Scotian Homes came into the picture.

Frank Horne retired from the business in 1984 and Bob continued to grow the hardware,  building supplies and Scotian Homes. In 1987 he purchased a foundation building Company called B & D Construction.  This was the finishing touch that gave them the full service from foundations to turn key (move in) all under one roof.

In the early 80’s, Scotian Homes started to build for people from Europe and build up a good relation with these people. When Bob Bona saw Europeans purchasing American cars in the early 90’s, he felt that it was the time to look at expanding to Europe but not before his daughter Suzanne graduated from St. F.X. University and went to Europe to learn the language, so we could communicate with our new customers.

The company now builds or consolidates material into ten Countries under the guidance of Suzanne Bona.  Over the years we have built up excellent employees whose knowledge has taken us to where we are today.  They have taken an interest and wanted to grow with us.  Without them we could not have done it.
